Our Question Diary
The private question diary for couples.
Write down the questions on your mind. Share them when you’re ready. Only the two of you can read what you write.
Some questions turn up in the middle of everyday life.
While doing the dishes, on the train, at three in the morning. And some are hard to just come out with.
With Our Question Diary you can jot them down in seconds. Just for yourself at first. When you’re ready, you share them with the person by your side.
No question of the day, no points, no streaks. Just your questions. And if nothing comes to mind, a prompt from the conversation game “… einfach reden!” can help.
From a question to a conversation.
Four steps, and this is how they look in the app. All examples are made up.
-
Write it down
Note a question in a few seconds. It stays private until you share it.
If you like, add a note about where the question came from. The note always stays with you alone.
-
Share
When you are ready, you share the question. Only the question is shared, not your note.
The other person gets a notification without the text of the question. Until they have answered, you can take it back.
-
Both answer
Each of you answers on your own. The answers only become visible once you have both answered, so you don’t influence each other.
Until then, the other person’s answer stays encrypted, even for the app. All you see are lines as a placeholder.
-
Talk
Then you see both answers, one below the other. Write about it, or pick it up over dinner.
If you like, mark the question as discussed and note what you agreed on.
Make it yours.
Six colour worlds, light or dark, with high contrast if you need it. Each of you chooses your own: you see the app in your colour, the other person in theirs.
Try it right here. This page and every phone on it change along with you.
Small, but thought through.
-
Prompts
Drawing a blank? The app gives you a random question from the German conversation game “… einfach reden!”. If you add it, it starts out private.
-
Open
See at a glance where an answer is still missing. There is one reminder after a week, nothing more.
-
History
All your questions by date. And now and then, a question from one year ago today.
-
Connect
Ideally you connect sitting next to each other, with a code to scan. No email address, no phone number.
-
Notifications
You decide which notifications arrive and when. They never contain the text of a question.
-
Test separating
Calmly see what would change after separating, without the other person noticing.
No subscription, no ads, no data for sale.
Our Question Diary is free. If the app means something to you, you can support it voluntarily. All features stay free for everyone either way.
Only you hold the key.
Everything you write is encrypted on your phone before it goes anywhere. We can’t read your questions and answers, even if we wanted to.
- No account with an email address or phone number
- No ads, no tracking, no analysis of your content
- No content in push notifications
- Servers in the EU
| Content | You | Us, the team behind the app | Apple and Google |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private question | Only you | No | No |
| Shared question | Both of you | No | No |
| Answer | Both of you, once you’ve both answered | No | No |
Nobody expects it.
But if you write honestly, you should know what happens if a relationship ends.
Either of you can separate at any time, without asking. Your own answers then disappear from the other person’s app, for real: the key to them is withdrawn. Beforehand, you can calmly preview what would change, without the other person noticing.
For one year you can undo the separation together. After that, you are separated for good.
What we can’t prevent: screenshots. We’d rather tell you now than later.
What you should know.
- If you forget your recovery code and lose your phone, your own content is gone. We can’t get it back, because we could never read it.
- Anyone holding your unlocked phone sees what you see. That’s why the app lock is on from the start.
- The encryption is built from well-reviewed building blocks, but our protocol has not yet been reviewed externally. Its description is public so anyone can check it.
The code is public.
If you know your way around, you can check that we keep our promises.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the app cost?
Nothing. There’s no subscription, no ads and no features that cost extra.
When will the app be available?
We’re building it right now. As soon as it’s in the App Store and on Google Play, you’ll find it here. There is deliberately no waiting list, so we don’t have to collect email addresses.
Do we both need the app?
Yes, you each need a phone with the app.
Can the other person see my questions?
Only the ones you share.
What happens if I lose my phone?
With your twelve-word recovery code you can restore everything on a new phone. Without the code that’s not possible, not even with our help.
Is there a version for friends or family?
No, it’s just for couples. On purpose.

I didn’t know that. I always thought you wanted some peace and quiet then.

Sometimes I do. Ask anyway, I’ll let you know.
