Help
The most common questions, answered briefly. And if something is missing: write to us.
Setting up and connecting
Do we both need the app?
Yes. Each of you needs your own phone with the app. You don’t need an email address or phone number for an account.
How do we connect?
One of you opens “Invite your partner” and shows the code, the other scans it with the app. Ideally you sit next to each other. If that isn’t possible, you can send a link. You then quickly compare a safety code of ten symbols, for example on the phone.
The invitation doesn’t work any more.
An invitation code can only be used once and is valid for 24 hours. Just create a new one.
Can I connect with more than one person?
No. Our Question Diary is deliberately built for exactly two people.
Questions, answers, prompts
Does the other person see my questions?
Only the ones you share. Notes on a question always stay private, even when you share the question.
Can I take back a shared question?
Yes, as long as the other person hasn’t answered yet.
Why can’t I see the other person’s answer yet?
Answers only become visible once you have both answered, so you don’t influence each other. Until then, the app only shows lines as a placeholder.
Can I change or withdraw my answer?
You can change it as long as the other person hasn’t answered yet. You can withdraw your answer at any time. It then also disappears from the other person’s app.
Where do the prompts come from?
From the German conversation game “… einfach reden!”. If you add a prompt, it becomes a private question of yours. You can share it like any other question.
Lost phone or new phone
I have a new phone.
Install the app, choose “I already have an account” and enter your twelve-word recovery code. The app then restores everything, including your connection.
I lost my phone.
With your recovery code you can restore everything on a new phone. Without the code that is impossible, even with our help, because we could never read your content.
Where do I find my recovery code?
In the settings under “Recovery code”, after unlocking. Write it down on paper and keep it safe, not as a photo or in a cloud.
Separating
What happens when I separate?
Your answers and comments disappear from the other person’s app, and theirs from yours. The questions stay with both of you. The other person gets a notification that something has changed about your connection.
Can I see beforehand what will change?
Yes. Under “Separate” there is a test mode. It shows how the app would look afterwards. Nothing is deleted, and the other person doesn’t notice.
Can we undo a separation?
Yes, for one year, but only together. After that you are separated for good, and the server deletes everything belonging to your connection.
Are my answers really gone?
The key to them is withdrawn. If the other phone is offline at that moment, it can still read your answers for at most 7 days. We cannot delete screenshots.
Notifications
Which notifications are there?
When the other person shares a question, when both answers become visible, for new comments, one reminder after a week, and a look-back “one year ago today”. You can switch off each kind separately.
Does the notification show my question?
No. Notifications never contain the text of a question or answer. You only see it in the app, after unlocking.
Deleting your account and export
How do I delete my account?
In the settings under “Delete account”. The server deletes everything immediately, and your content also disappears from the other person’s app.
Can I export my content?
Yes, in the settings. The file is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere safe.
Cost
How much does the app cost?
Nothing. There is no subscription, no advertising and no features that cost extra.
Contact
Write to us at hello@ourquestiondiary.app. We will reply as soon as we can.
Please never send us the content of your questions or answers, and never your recovery code. We don’t need either to help you, and we will never ask for them.
What we cannot do, because we can never read your content:
- restore lost content,
- undo a separation,
- delete the other person’s content.
More about the technology is on the security page.
